Where to find a dog breeder
Once you’ve settled on a particular breed with the characteristics you’re looking for, you’ll need to find a dog breeder who’s both reputable and responsible. There’s no substitute for a knowledgeable breeder when you’re looking to adopt a healthy purebred puppy, but it can be difficult to separate the breeder’s with your best interests in mind from those that are looking to make money.
The following are some places to find a breeder that will work to match you with the perfect puppy or dog:
Kennel or Breed Clubs
These organizations usually have members that are responsible breeders. They’re also a great resource for information on the particular dog breeds you’re researching. You can visit the American Kennel Club website for a list of AKC breed clubs near you.
Dog Shows and Competitions
Take a trip to events in your area, including shows and obedience, agility, and herding competitions. The competitors are there to strut their stuff, but most of the owners are willing to answer a few questions, particularly after their events. They may be able to give you a lead on where to find a breeder.
Purebred Rescue Organizations
A purebred dog rescue group is dedicated to finding homes for dogs of a particular breed and will have lots of information to help you make an informed choice when you pick a breed. The members may also have connections to breeders in the area or be willing to help you look.
Referrals from people you meet when preparing for a puppy
If you take the time to make sure you’re ready to adopt a puppy, you’ll likely come across people that are either breeders or know where to find a responsible breeder. Of course, don’t take someone’s word as to the quality of the breeder. You should do your own research to make sure they’re right for you. Here are some questions to ask a dog breeder to help you in your search.
Keep in mind that responsible breeders generally don’t advertise in the newspaper or in magazines. While you can find some this way, take extra steps to ensure that you’re contacting a reputable breeder. Ask for references and visit their home or kennel to evaluate their breeding program.
